Metal coping on a firewall is one of those things that gets ignored until it becomes a real problem. When it starts to lift, separate, or get torn loose, the wood and structure underneath are completely exposed. Water finds that gap fast. So does wind.

Here's what we were working with - the coping had pulled away from the firewall and peeled back, leaving the underlying wood nailer and decking wide open. That kind of exposure doesn't stay a minor issue for long. Every day without a fix is another opportunity for moisture to work its way in and start causing damage you can't see from the ground.

We handled this as an emergency call, got up there, stripped out the failed coping, and replaced it properly. The new metal coping was set tight to the firewall and secured the full length of the run. The asphalt shingles at the base of the wall were addressed as part of the work to make sure everything tied together cleanly - no half measures.

This is the kind of job where cutting corners catches up with you fast. Flashing and coping details are what keep water out at the transitions and terminations of a roof. When those fail, the damage almost always ends up being bigger than the repair itself would have cost if caught early.

If you've got loose metal on your roof, visible gaps at a wall or parapet, or you know your coping took a hit from recent weather - don't sit on it. Getting eyes on it sooner rather than later is always the right call.
